Celestica’s Ethernet Switch DS1000 — Enhancing Open Networking through OCP Acceptance
Celestica was the
first contributor to the Open
Compute Project’s (OCP) Enterprise Connectivity Solutions (ECS)
Sub-Project in February 2023, after our DS1000 Gigabit Ethernet Layer
3 switch achieved Accepted Product Recognition — the highest level of OCP
conformance. A shared milestone for Celestica and the OCP, this contribution
will continue to accelerate enterprise adoption of open disaggregated hardware
and software technologies. It was our
first contribution, but won’t be the last. For example, since then we’ve
announced the DS5000 – an
open, 800G data center switch solution.
The OCP is a
collaborative community whose mission is to apply the benefits of open source
and open collaboration to hardware and speed the pace of innovation at the Edge
and in the data center’s networking equipment, general purpose and GPU servers,
storage devices and appliances, and scalable rack designs.
Those benefits include avoiding
software vendor lock-in by enabling enterprises to implement different
applications from multiple developers to run on top of one piece of hardware.
For an end user, open source hardware delivers longer-term reliability and
interoperability.
The DS1000, 48-Port
1GbE Access Switch is our first OCP Accepted contribution, another first in our long history of OCP participation.
The DS1000 features 48 x 10/100/1000Mbps RJ45 ports and 8 SFP+ ports within a 1U form factor for data center and enterprise-class access deployments. Based on the Broadcom Trident-3 chipset, with an on-board 4-core Intel-based CPU module, it is optimized for:
- 1GbE Data Center Top of Rack
- Enterprise Edge/Access
- Management Switch Use Cases
- Open and Third-Party Network Operating Systems
We also incorporated an Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) installer to support open and third-party network operating systems. That is critical to helping enterprises realize the benefits of integrating open source technologies into their IT infrastructures.
